David Chipperfield’s designs are renowned for their lightness and simplicity—subtle yet elegant, with a preference for monochromatic aesthetics. He embraces the minimalist architectural philosophy of “less is more” and “filling spaces with sunlight.” His works deliberately avoid flaunting personal stylistic signatures; instead, they seamlessly integrate with the local environment and emphasize site-specific design tailored to each particular location. He excels particularly in the design and renovation of museums and art galleries. He has restored and designed Berlin’s New Museum (Neues Museum), and in Shanghai, China, he has designed a series of museums and art galleries along the West Bund. As of March 2023, he is leading the design of an expansion for the National Archaeological Museum in Athens, Greece.

Germany | New Museum in Berlin

Hangzhou | Liangzhu Museum
Located along the canal in the Liangzhu Cultural Zone of Hangzhou, the site covers an area of 40,000 square meters with a building area of 10,000 square meters. The structure consists of four rectangular volumes of identical width but varying heights. Inside the building complex, multiple courtyards are ingeniously arranged. The exterior walls are constructed from Huangdong stone, giving the building a seamless, jade-like appearance from afar—a testament to the harmonious integration of art and nature, as well as history and modernity.

Shanghai | West Bund Museum
Located along the Xuhui riverside in Shanghai, it’s known as “China’s Pompidou.” The structure consists of three enormous, pure-white “boxes.” Its entrance is a massive glass box that offers breathtaking views of the Huangpu River and Lujiazui through its transparent walls. The interior spaces are ingeniously designed, with different exhibition halls seamlessly connected via transitional spaces.
